The concept of social capital as the focus of social policy shifts the focus of responsibility from government to individual, from economy to society informing policies that highlight social behavior reducing costs to government providing in turn economic solutions to social problems.Social policy is the part of public policy that has to do with social issues such as public access to health care or other social programs. The aim of social policy is to improve human welfare and to meet the human need for education, health, housing and social security.Ireland’s social policy is a mixture of legislation laid down by both British and Irish governments. As such, it was heavily influenced by the British Fabian model; this had serious implications for sexuality and the family. The Catholic Church also influenced the development of Irish social policy especially in relation to sexual morality, the family and the position of women in Irish.
Ireland’s record on social policy remains below the average of its EU partners, despite notable progress in promoting social cohesion, a new study shows.Social policy is relevant to all social services, including social care. The relevance of social policy to social care work is that, the social care sector relies on the government and other funding providers, understanding the need to provide services for the most vulnerable groups in society.
